3-2 Site of the hotel in 1947 This convention hotel was built in 1970 over what used to be Water Street. It has the most meeting space available in any upstate hotel, full banquet facilities and a pool on the third floor sun deck. In the past, this section of Main Street contained several stores and office buildings.
3-3 Mr. Austin Steward In the 1800s Austin Steward had his grocery on this site. Mr. Steward, a former slave born in Virginia, was the first African-American businessman in Rochester. Read more about him in his autobiography Twenty-Two Years a Slave and Forty years a Freeman.
